bioWroot
Low Seating Inspired by Nature
bioWroot is an alternative office seating solution based on biomimetic principles derived from the reinforcement structures of plant roots (phi-thickening) and the natural growth patterns of wood (T-joint). The design is inspired by the biological mechanism of phi-thickenings – structural reinforcements in roots that provide strength as they penetrate the soil.
With a low-profile form, bioWroot is designed to encourage active posture, engage deep core muscles, maintain hip mobility, and promote dynamic sitting positions. This helps improve blood circulation in the lower limbs and reduces static stress on the spine during laptop work. The structure is based on phi-section geometry and fractal principles of cellular structures, ensuring high stability and load-bearing capacity.
3D printing technology simulates the natural growth of tree fibers and branch-trunk joints, enabling innovative connections that maintain both flexibility and strong resistance to tension and compression. The seat modules are interchangeable and come in two versions: a mesh infill based on Voronoi structures mimicking the cross-section of phi-thickenings, or a surface texture inspired by the relief of cystoliths. These fill-ins also provide a tactile function—stimulating the skin, enhancing circulation, and offering a calming, stress-relieving effect.
bioWroot modules can be linked using a connector extension, allowing for the creation of larger seating compositions for multiple users.
