About

The bioWdesign project stems from long-term interdisciplinary research into the biomimetic mechanisms of wood and their potential in the design of furniture, interiors, and work environments.

During its early stages—presented at two editions of Milano Design Week and Biomim’EXPO—the project demonstrated how structures and functions inspired by trees can shape innovative and sustainable design solutions. The first phase translated these insights into art-based reinterpretations of iconic furniture pieces. The second phase, Like a Tree in the Wind, merged art, design, and science in an installation that embodied the flexibility, growth, and adaptability of a tree in the wind—used as a metaphor for work, rest, and focus in modern office spaces.

In spring and summer 2025, the project evolved from conceptual exploration to practical application. A new product line—bioWellbeing—emerged by abstracting specific elements from the original holistic installation, tailored for biophilic workspaces. This collection integrates proven biomimetic mechanisms developed in previous phases, combines fractal geometry with additive manufacturing techniques, and follows a natural growth logic—where each piece “grows” much like a plant.

The bioWellbeing Collection

Rooted in the bioWdesign philosophy, the bioWellbeing collection emphasizes modularity, simplicity, multifunctionality, and nature-inspired design—not as mere aesthetics, but as a foundation for creating environments that support mental and physical well-being, biophilia, and new modes of focus and work. It introduces a biodynamic aesthetic for contemporary offices, shaped through a biomimicry methodology that informs not only form and function but also the philosophy and sustainability strategies of 21st-century design.

The collection consists of  bioWroot seating, bioWglow lamp, and bioWdivider panels,  incorporates light-diffusing elements inspired by cystoliths in ficus leaves, organic shapes based on natural root reinforcements (known as phi-thickenings), and structural principles derived from branch-trunk T-joints—offering both strength and flexibility in the way components connect and reinforce one another. Leveraging additive manufacturing and fractal principles, a single geometric logic is repeated at multiple scales—from intricate details to overall composition—enhancing modularity and versatility.

Each product is designed for functional adaptability and configurability, responding to the growing demand for personalized and dynamic workspaces. The collection’s organic forms subtly nurture a sense of connection with nature, while its minimalist aesthetic reflects the quiet elegance of natural minimalism. In bioWellbeing, biophilia is not an add-on—it is deeply embedded in the collection’s core, shaping its concept, material expression, and spatial identity from within.

Modularity and Intercompatibility

The modularity of the bioWellbeing collection lies in the full compatibility and interchangeability of its individual components—bioWroot, bioWglow, and bioWdivider. Unified connection principles allow these elements to be flexibly combined and reconfigured to suit the user’s changing needs. This compatibility enables the creation of unique spatial solutions that adapt to personal preferences, support biophilia, and offer a high degree of customization within the workspace.

BioWDesign Gallery 2024

We present the initial outcomes of the project at the intersection of art and science.

Our intention is to showcase the results of the scientific phase of the project in a creative manner. Our outputs consist of biomimetic models. These prototypes exhibit fascinating features. They are beautiful, possess remarkable properties, and, at first glance, appear as organic artifacts to designers. We sought a way to bring their future applications closer to designers and the public, and we chose a unique approach. You will become acquainted with our models through a distinctive scene.

We have selected iconic pieces – legends of 20th-century furniture design. They will come to life in the BIOWDESIGN GALLERY 2024 in a transformed, visionary art form. We intend to pay homage to renowned designers and the era in which these iconic pieces were created. Through their historical creations, we will provide a glimpse of a path for the future.
