From Prototype to Open Sustainable Design

bioWellbeing 2.0

The final developmental phase of the bioWdesign project was represented by the collection bioWellbeing 2.0 in 2026. Rather than introducing a completely new formal language, this stage focused on the refinement, optimisation, and technological maturation of the design principles established in the previous collection.

The three core objects—bioWroot 2.0, bioWglow 2.0, and bioWdivider 2.0—retained their original conceptual identity, while undergoing substantial transformation in material strategy, ergonomics, production logic, and structural detailing. The intention was not to redesign the collection aesthetically, but to bring it closer to practical implementation, sustainable manufacturing, and wider accessibility.

A decisive innovation of this phase was the transition to Nonoilen®, an advanced biodegradable biopolymer material based on renewable resources. Its application significantly shifted the project toward environmentally responsible production and healthier material solutions for interior environments. Through this material change, the collection gained a new ecological dimension while preserving the expressive and biomorphic character of the original designs.

The objects were further optimised in terms of proportions, ergonomics, dimensions, print paths, and assembly methods. These adjustments reflected the experience gained from earlier prototypes, exhibitions, and user interaction. The resulting forms became more efficient, more rational in production, and more adaptable to real use scenarios.

The lighting family bioWglow 2.0 was expanded by three new atmospheric table luminaires derived from the formal and optical principles of the original pendant version. These objects developed the concept of light diffusion, emotional ambience, and photobiomodulation into smaller-scale domestic and workplace applications.

In the case of bioWdivider 2.0, the original magnetic connection system was replaced by a mechanical joint solution that simplified manufacturing, transportation, assembly, and long-term maintenance. This shift represented an important step toward practical scalability and user autonomy.

The philosophical essence of bioWellbeing 2.0 lies in the idea that future design should not depend exclusively on centralised industrial production. With access to digital fabrication data, users, communities, institutions, or local makers can produce selected components themselves according to their own spatial needs. Design thus becomes more open, distributed, adaptive, and participatory.

At the same time, the collection maintains its original values: biophilic quality, emotional comfort, modularity, sustainability, and the translation of biological intelligence into everyday environments. In this sense, bioWellbeing 2.0 became not only the final output of the project, but also a manifesto for a new relationship between nature, technology, and human wellbeing.
